Kremsnita - indigenous Croatian dessert and an intangible cultural asset of Croatia

Immerse yourself in a sweet, fluffy euphoria called Kremsnita!

Attention! If you are reading this text, you will most likely have a huge appetite and an inexplicable craving for sweets. Below you will find a recipe for one of the most popular Croatian desserts - kremsnita!

Kremsnita is a very simple puff pastry cake with whipped egg cream. Although this dessert is popular in many parts of Europe, it is prepared in a slightly different way in each region, and in Croatia the most famous are Samoborska kremsnita (samobor cream cake) and Zagrebacka kremsnita (Zagreb cream cake).

Samobor kremsnita is protected as an intangible cultural asset in Croatia, and the special thing about this cake is the fact that it is eaten warm.
Zagreb kremsnita is slightly different - instead of a layer of puff pastry, it contains whipped cream and chocolate icing. Which would you rather try?

In this text we are going to present a recipe for traditional Samobor kremsnita. Try to resist this dessert!

Ingredients:

1 packet of puff pastry
8 eggs
1 liter of milk
200 grams of sugar
2 packets of vanilla sugar
60 grams of flour

Preparation:

1. Divide the puff pastry into two equal parts and place them on the baking sheet.

2. Bake the top and bottom crust separately in an oven preheated to 175 degrees Celsius for about 10 to 15 minutes until they turn light brown. Let them cool down.

3. Separate the egg whites from the yolks and beat egg whites until stiff.

4. Add sugar, vanilla sugar, flour and a few tablespoons of milk to the egg yolks. Heat the rest of the milk in the saucepan.

5. Put the egg yolk mixture in a separate saucepan and gradually add warm milk over low heat until it thickens. Let the mixture cool down a bit and then add the beaten egg whites.

6. Pour the warm mixture over the baked crust and cover it with another crust. Sprinkle icing sugar over the cream slices. Good Appetite!

Surely you can't wait to make this dessert yourself, but we definitely recommend stopping on the way to one of our villas near Zagreb and trying the real Samobor kremsnita, prepared according to the original recipe!
