Croatia during the winter? Ideal for anyone looking for some peace and quiet

Experience a completely different Croatia during the winter days, when mass tourism has already subsided. Discover Croatia's nature which shows its splendid side and enjoy the pleasant climate with mild temperatures! Below you will find some tips on what you can do in Croatia during the winter.

Even if the events unfortunately have to be a bit smaller this year, with all its natural beauties and possibilities Croatia is still the ideal destination for your winter vacation.

Starting with the sweetest event in Croatia, the Chocolate Festival in the "Pearl of the Adriatic" - Opatija, which takes place on the first weekend of December in the citys museums, art galleries, exhibition pavilions, restaurants and hotels. Here the producers present the best Croatian, but also international, chocolate brands. The attractive programme also includes tastings, concerts and workshops.

Advent at the Trsat Castle, in the port city of Rijeka, begins on 1 December and attracts around 140,000 visitors every year. At the entrance to the castle, visitors enter the Christmas Fairy Tale, which is decorated with thousands of lights and also houses a unique Nativity scene and a Christmas market. Enjoy some mulled wine with a breathtaking view of the city.



Skiing with a view of the Kvarner Bay is possible at the Platak Ski Resort, which is located near Rijeka. There are 5.5 km of slopes and 4 lifts at your disposal for skiing and snowboarding. The slopes have different levels of difficulty and are therefore suitable for the whole family. You can rent equipment on the spot at the ski rental. Night skiing, hiking and sledding are also available here. An excursion to the Platak ski area guarantees pure winter fun!

In the port city of Rijeka a big carnival takes place at the beginning of February. Carnival, also called the fifth season, has a long tradition in Croatia. Participants and spectators come from all over the world to be a part of the International Carnival Parade. The Balinjerada is held in the nearby city of Opatija. This is an event in which the disguised participants, in homemade soapboxes, drive down the street. The carnival in the Dalmatian city of Split is different from the others, as masquerades are usually held in palaces or libraries.



The Istrian wine region is full of wine roads and wine cellars where excellent Istrian wine is produced, such as Malvasia and Terrano, but also international varieties such as Pinot, Chardonnay, Merlot and many others. The winter season is suitable for wine tasting and also for tasting traditional specialties in local restaurants.

The Winter Festival in Dubrovnik begins at the end of November and ends at the beginning of January. It begins with the lighting of the Advent candle. The festival combines gastronomy, culture and art programmes in different locations in the city. Unique monuments are decorated with thousands of Christmas lights, which turn the city into a real winter fairy tale land.
