Omis is known today as
a small tourist town on the coast. However, this place was
the seat of famous Dalmatian pirates during the Middle Ages. In this wonderful town you can get to know the
turbulent past of this area, but on the other hand you have the opportunity to discover the beauties of the unspoiled nature of Dalmatia.
If you visit the town of Omis
in August, you will have the chance to witness
the reconstructed pirate battle from the 13th century, in which Omis pirates defeated the Venetians. To honour this, the so-called pirate battle takes place every year on August 18th in the port of Omis, the highlight of the tourist offer of Omis.
The town of
Omis was founded by pirates who ruled the sea all the way from Split to Dubrovnik and were
feared even by the mighty Venetians. It is therefore not surprising that manifestations in memory of the famous pirates still take place in Omis, even today. Every year, part of the turbulent Dalmatian past is brought back to life for a day. If you thought that nowadays you can only find pirates in stories, you are wrong!
Hundreds of armed pirates and Venetians are waiting for you with their sailing ships in the port of Omis. A pirate battle is definitely an event not to be missed!
The pirate battle is
not the only event in the town of Omis that is worth visiting. If you are looking for an
active vacation, this town will meet your expectations. When visiting Omis
in September, you will have the opportunity to
take part in the Omis Half Marathon. Since the location of the city of Omis is truly unique, this race takes place in one of the most beautiful landscapes in this region.
Omis is
located between the mountains and the sea. Now you are probably wondering where a marathon could take place in such an area, but the 20 km long route is
located in the gorge of the Cetina River, surrounded by breathtaking nature. This event includes two races -
a half marathon and a 6 km recreational race, which means that not only the professionals, but also recreational racers can take part in this race. For the youngest family members
there is also a children's race. Spend your vacation in one of our villas near Split and experience a part of the turbulent Dalmatian past!
