The Island of Korcula, located on the southern part of Dalmatia, is almost 280 km2 large and inhabited by approx. 16 000 inhabitants, is marked by its turbulent history and today known for its cultural heritage and above all, its beautiful nature. The island was inhabited already in prehistoric times. In Greek time, it was a colony called Korkyra. Today the island is connected by ferry with the Peljesac peninsula, with Split and with the Island of Lastovo.
The “capital” of the island is the same-named beautiful town of Korcula, which is believed to be the birth town of Marco Polo. The two larger towns on the island are Blato in the inland, and Vela Luka, a small harbour town.
While staying in Korcula, visit the cave “Vela Spila”, an important prehistoric archaeological site, or spend a day island-hopping, as around Korcula there is an archipelago of about 20 uninhabited little islands with accessible coast. If you want to discover the wider area, do a day trip by ferry and visit Dubrovnik or the Mljet National Park.
To make the most of your stay, visit a local winery and try at least one of the variety of activities such as sailing, windsurfing, mountain biking, hiking, scuba diving, snorkelling…
