The largest Dalmatian island and the third largest island on the Adriatic is located opposite from the historic city of Split. This fairy-tale island is marked by a long and turbulent past that goes back to prehistoric times, and in addition to the population, it also left an indelible mark on the cultural heritage of the region.

Centuries-old churches, palaces and mansions still stay strong in the towns on the island of Brac. If you want to explore the island's history, be sure to visit the oldest place on the island, Skrip, where the defensive walls of the Illyrian settlement from the 3rd century still bear witness to its long history. The economy of the island of Brac flourished especially in Roman times, when the settlements on the north coast of the island developed. During the economic rise, quarries were built where stones were excavated for the construction of the most important buildings. One of them is the Diocletian's Palace in Split. Later, the famous Brac stone was even used to build the White House in Washington. Brac stone adorns almost every historical building on the island, from early Christian churches to Renaissance and Baroque villas.

Despite its rich cultural heritage, Brac is best known worldwide for the magical sandy beach Zlatni rat in Bol, located at the foot of Vidova Gora, the highest peak on the Adriatic. This beach is also included on the list of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world.

If you choose Brac as your next travel destination, you should definitely indulge your taste buds with the best flavours of this region. Visit one of the many taverns and enjoy the flavours of homemade olive oil, fresh figs and almonds or fish and seafood of the highest quality. If you visit one of the local festivals during the summer months, be sure to try the famous lamb and the well-known cheese from Brac.
